Tomato Diaries: Keevil & Keevil's Tomato Sandwich

September 02, 2017 by Will Caggiano

We’re vaguely suspicious of friends who say they’re soooo ready for fall.

What’s the rush? It’s not enough that the school year slog has begun and our hands are the shape of wretched claws from filling out so many forms? Sure, we’re ready to punt on summer’s last gasps of dog breath humidity and looking forward to pleasant weather, cute outfits, brilliant foliage and harvest festivals. Autumn is glorious in these parts, we're not denying it.

Still, let’s slow our roll, hit pause on the creep and eventual outbreak of pumpkin flavors (please don’t do it, La Croix!) and take time to savor the remaining simple pleasures of summer before it recedes.

In other words, let’s get over to Keevil & Keevil for a Tomato Sandwich before this seasonal offering pulls its annual Keyser Söze.

Keyser Söze: And like that...he's gone.

Keyser Söze: And like that...he's gone.

Could there be anything more easy on the eyes that stages such a delightful ambush on the taste buds? Seriously, don’t be fooled by this one. It’s the Big Bad Wolf in Grandmother's house dress, innocent and sweet at first glance, but we all know how that turned out.

Chef Harrison, as he does, integrates local components into this traditional sandwich. An olive oil sub roll from Albemarle Baking Company, dressed unabashedly with Duke’s mayonnaise, bookends Hanover, Virginia, tomatoes sprinkled with a healthy dash of salt.

Basic AF but somehow perfectly complex. It’s a juxtaposition that defines your summer and sweeps over you with nostalgia as its end draws near.
